For the past 27 years, the Emerald Awards have recognized and celebrated the outstanding environmental achievements of large and small businesses, individuals, not-for-profit associations, community groups, youth, and governments.

In 2009, the CACP was initiated by the Waterton Biosphere Reserve in response to increasing conflicts between large carnivores (bears, wolves, cougars) and agricultural land uses in southwestern Alberta. The CACP benefits both people and large carnivores. The program is a multi-faceted community-based approach which identifies key sources of human wildlife conflicts, designs practical solutions to improve attractant management, reduces the economic impacts of large carnivores on agricultural producers, and enhances the safety of residents. Initiatives include: electric fencing projects, grain bin replacements and feed storage retrofits, removal of dead livestock from the landscape, and bear safety workshops for agricultural families.

Congratulations to all the landowners, land managers, local partners, funders and organizations who have supported the CACP over the years.  Your commitment and hard work on helping reduce and mitigate conflicts that can occur when people and carnivores share the same landscape is being recognized !

The program is a provincial success story of different people and perspectives working together through partnership organizations and levels of government to facilitate the coexistence of people and large carnivores.

The Waterton Biosphere Reserve would like to invite you to join us as we tour various carnivore mitigation projects of the Carnivores and Communities Program (CACP).

The CACP provides support for activities designed to remove or reduce carnivore attractants. Current attractant management projects include removing dead livestock from the landscape, making grain and feed storage facilities more secure, and installing electric fencing to keep carnivores away from other attractants (such as calving grounds).

Our 2016 tour will showcase innovative ways farmers and ranchers are working to reduce the risk of conflict with large carnivores on their property.

TOUR DETAILS:

DATE:  Thursday September 22^nd, 2016
LOCATION:  Meet at Twin Butte Community Hall
TIME:  8:30am – 6:30pm
Tour bus will be leaving the hall at 9:00am

SCHEDULE:

• 8:30am – Welcome and sign-in
• 9am – Bus leaves the hall
• 9:30am to 12pm – Tour various farms and ranches in the area
• 12pm (approximately) – Lunch
• 1pm – Continue tour
• 5:00pm to 6:30pm – Back at the hall for supper and wrap-up

TOUR HIGHLIGHTS:

• Unique 3-D electric fence project for bears and ungulates
• Modified Sea Can (shipping container) grain storage
• Options for permanent and temporary electric fence to deter carnivores
• Bear-resistant grain bin doors
• Multi-purpose electric fencing that protects grain, hay and silage storage from bears, elk and deer
• Discussion on the draft Grizzly Bear Recovery Plan, the Deadstock Removal Program, and review of the Southwest Alberta Grizzly Bear Monitoring Project results
• Hear about bear safety training opportunities specific to farm and ranch families
• Opportunity for landowners to generate ideas for projects on their own property and learn more about funding available to assist with these projects

Thanks to grants from the provincial and federal government there is no charge to attend the tour which includes both lunch and supper, though pre-registration is required.      Please register by September 16^th, 2016.

Rancher with Carnivore Attractant Management Project

The WBR is excited to share with you the newly released Large Carnivore Attractant  Management Project Report for Southwestern Alberta 2013 – 2014

This document highlights the hard work being done by producers in southwestern Alberta to reduce the risk of conflict with large carnivores from 2013 to the spring of 2015.

Restricting access to attractants can significantly reduce carnivore-human conflicts. In southwestern Alberta, the primary agricultural attractants include dead livestock (deadstock), granaries, bee yards, livestock, and calving areas. In order to decrease conflicts with large carnivores, the Carnivores and Communities program provides support to activities designed to remove or reduce carnivore attractants. Current attractant management projects are outlined below including removing dead livestock from the landscape, making grain and feed storage facilities more secure, and installing electric fencing to keep carnivores away from other attractants.

These projects are a part of the WBRA Carnivores and Communities program which works with landowners and other partners to reduce conflicts between people and large carnivores, a benefit to both human and large carnivore populations. The program is multi-faceted and targets reducing attractants for large carnivores, reducing the economic impact on landowners coexisting with large carnivores, and enhancing the safety of all residents.
