About Day on the Creek

First held in May 2017, the Day on the Creek is a unique outdoor learning experience where over 800 students, teachers, parents, and the general public learn about the environment and human history along Pincher Creek and explore the importance of watershed stewardship. Day on the Creek is hosted by the Waterton Biosphere Reserve Association along with the Town of Pincher Creek, Holy Spirit School Division, and the Livingstone Range School Division.

During the Day on the Creek event, a series of learning stations are set up along and adjacent to Pincher Creek where it runs through the town of Pincher Creek. More than 80 presenters and volunteers from the community and up to 20 partner organizations come together to address a variety of topics and offer learning activities.

Students and their teachers from Canyon, Matthew Halton, St. Michael’s, Napi’s Playground Elementary and Piikani Nation Secondary schools are invited to spend the day along the creek and are scheduled to attend one or more presentations between 9 am and 3 pm. There are also a number of unscheduled activities ongoing throughout the day.

While focused on the needs of students, everyone is welcome to attend the Day on the Creek and explore the various learning activities including:

  • Traditional First Nations knowledge, history, and connections to our environment
  • Native plants and animals that live along Pincher Creek
  • Riparian and aquatic ecosystems and how to monitor their health
  • Human impact and responsibility for our environment
  • How our watershed works
  • Ways to steward our creek and keep it healthy
  • Local archaeology, geology, and history about Pincher Creek
THANK YOU TO THE MANY TEACHERS, STAFF MEMBERS, STUDENTS, INDIVIDUALS AND ORGANIZATIONS WHO MAKE THIS DAY POSSIBLE !
